Cambridgeshire features large areas of very low lying land, much of which is flat - without significant level changes across typical sites.
When our land surveyors produce topographic surveys in Cambridge and surrounding areas such as Huntingdon and Peterborough, the contours displayed on the survey drawings are typically at small intervals. That is to say that for the contours to usefully indicate changes in the terrain of the survey area, the height difference between each contour band can be as low as 0.1 metres.
Topographic surveys are commonly requested when a change of use in land is being considered and in areas such as this, where flood risk can be particularly high, a land survey can be compulsory.
Depending on the location of prospective sites, planning applications are dealt with by Cambridge County Council and Greater Cambridge Shared Planning.
